Tongyeong, a city along the beautiful South Sea (Namhae), has many beautiful beaches. The inland beach with winding coastline is unique in its charm, but the 570 islands that dot the sea, aptly name Dadohae (sea of many islands), are also lined with many unique beaches. Discover the colorful sides of the sea, from refreshingly clear beaches to emerald beaches where you can swim with fish, and hidden beaches loved by campers.

Spend time in seclusion at the only inland beach in Tongyeong, and enjoy bathing in the jewel-like sea that unfolds like an hourglass when viewed from the hill. Take barefoot walks on the long stretch of the fine white sandy beach, and let the pebbles tickle your soles. At night, light a bonfire at the camp ground and share a story compelled by the sea. The sea of Tongyeong, after all, has a charm that coaxes open closed hearts.

    Tongyeong Suryuk Beach

    Clear and dainty neighborhood beach

    • Families

Tongyeong Suryuk Beach, also known as Tongyeong Public Beach, is a small but precious haven to spend a leisurely moment. This 550-metre-long beach, made up of sand and pebbles, is the only public beach in Tongyeong, since Tongyeong's inland area has a very little sandy beach despite being next to the sea. The beach is famous among Tongyeong locals, but is virtually unknown by tourists. This makes the beach a great place to take a dip in the unspoiled waters of Namhae.

It also serves as an event venue for international beach volleyball competitions and water shows in summer. To the right-hand side of the beach, one can see the Jingyo Bridge stretching toward the sea and the lighthouse at the end. It is a beloved fishing spot for locals, but you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the beach from here. Another way to enjoy the beach is to rent a bicycle and take a leisurely ride along the beach. Enjoy a relaxing time in the secluded beach.

    Bongam Beach

    Beach covered with smooth pebbles

Bongam Beach is a fantastic beach with black pebbles spread out over a 1-km-long beach. This beach on the southwest side of Chubongdo Island, connected to Hansando Island via Chubongdaegyo Bridge, is lined with dark gray pebbles along the gentle coastline. The pebbles on this beach are known far and wide as Bongam Suseok (suiseki), and is said to draw visitors who come to this place with the express purpose to see the pebbles.

When you take a dip in the clear waters or sit on a quiet beach, you can hear the song of the waves that must have sculpted the rough stones into round pebbles over time. On a rainy day, the sound of raindrops falling on large and small pebbles conjure the sentimentality of cloudy days. Whether you are enjoying your solitude, spending time with your loved ones, or looking for a moment to deepen familial bonds, the sea at Bongam Beach will warmly welcome everyone.

    Bijindo Beach

Sea laid out like an emerald

    • Couples
    • Families

Bijindo Beach is a treasure of Namhae, where the blue sea spreads out on both sides of the 23,000-square-metre white sandy beach. Bijindo, which means a place like a jewel where Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the enemy, has a fantastic sea as its name suggests. You can reach the island by taking a 40-minute ferry ride from the Tongyeong Port Passenger Terminal, and a 5-minute walk from the pier in the outer port village will reveal the emerald-coloured sea that you have only seen on Jeju Island or tropical resorts.

After bathing in the clear and transparent sea with the fish, go up the hill to beautiful Miindo Observatory When viewed from above, the beach resembles an hourglass, where the calm west beach meets the rough waves of the east beach. Make sure to take pictures against this exotic view. Without a place tag, nobody would know where you are!

    Yeondaedo Beach

Warm sea that embraces the Dadohae

    • Couples
    • Families

Hidden in a deep bay dug into the land, Yeondaedo Beach is a sea of raw nature. The beach looks like a steep arc cut into the land on the map, but the beach gives you a feeling of being embraced by nature when you actually visit. Yeondaedo Island can be reached after a 15-minute-long ferry ride that connects Yeondaedo Island, Hangnimdo Island, and Darahang Port, a small port in Tongyeong. Although it is a small island, it is a good place to do some auto-camping because one can load one's vehicle on the ferry.

There are some larger and more rugged pebbles on this beach, compared to others in the Gyeongnam area, so visitors may find it more difficult to walk here. These pebbles most likely line the beach because of the bay's shape, which makes it difficult for the tidal forces to reach the pebbles. After enjoying the beach, make your way to the suspension bridge that connects Yeondaedo and Manjido Islands. As you walk along the bridge over the blue sea, you will realize that 98 m is not short at all.

    Daehang Beach

Clear and calm sea loved by campers

    • Couples
    • Families

Daehang Beach is a treasure of Dadohae, loved for bathing and camping. If you take a boat from Gaochi Quay in Tongyeong and enter Saryangdo, you will find a fine sandy beach on the northern shore facing Tongyeong. On a clear day, the sea shines with a turquoise light, but in summer there is a floating fence, so it is difficult to take good pictures here. However, one can feel the will of the islanders to ensure the safety of visitors.

As an island famous for scuba diving, you can see quite a few fish while bathing in the clear sea. It is also really fun to wear goggles and look for the various types of fish in the sea. After bathing in the sea, head over to Ongnyeobong Suspension Bridge. Even the most lion-hearted can become humble in the face of this thrilling suspension bridge. There is a paid camp ground on the beach, run by the village. Fill your ice box with meat and seafood from the land, and place them over a charcoal fire with a view of the clear sea. You will understand why people say that the taste depends on the atmosphere.
