San Diego's Spruce Street Suspension Bridge is a 375-foot long pedestrian bridge that stretches across the Kate Sessions Canyon at a height of 70 feet. The bridge is supported by steel cables that are secured to huge slabs of concrete buried in the soil.

Constructed in 1912, the bridge was designed by Edwin Capps for the practical purpose of crossing the canyon to access trolley lines. Today, locals and visitors enjoy a stroll across this bridge for the views and serenity offered in its secluded spot. Gusty winds make it sway, so it's not ideal for those with a fear of heights.

Spruce Street Suspension Bridge highlights

The biggest highlight of the Spruce Street Suspension Bridge is, of course, the canyon view, but it's also known as a romantic spot due to its serene ambience and seclusion. You can also explore the canyon below by heading down the narrow trail at the end of the bridge. Along the trail, you'll spot cactus, palms, eucalyptus trees, and other vegetation.

The footbridge is part of the Seven Bridges Hike, which is a 5.5-mile easy loop trail that takes you to some of San Diego's most charming areas. You'll pass by eateries, parks, and more along the way.

Good to know when visiting Spruce Street Suspension Bridge

The Spruce Suspension Bridge is located in a residential area, so visitors should be respectful of the residents. Although the bridge is somewhat hidden, it's easy to find if you drive to the end of Spruce Street. Street parking is available. Keep in mind that the bridge is quite high and that it does move, so it may not be suitable for all visitors.

Nearby, your family can enjoy an afternoon in Balboa Park, where you'll find walking trails, open spaces, museums, the San Diego Zoo, and more. You can also reach the suspension bridge by walking down Spruce Street from the park.
